FAQs

Hudson Valley Honor Flight

I would like to help fund raise. How can I get involved?

Please contact the chair of our Fundraising Committee, Carol Smith, at carol.hvhonorflight@gmail.com or 845-391-0076.

I would like to volunteer at events and Flight Day. How can I help?

Please visit our Volunteer page to learn more about volunteer opportunities and to complete an application. We have several events each year and are always in need of enthusiastic volunteers to lend a hand. Thanks for your interest!

When is your next flight?

Our upcoming flights are now scheduled for 2024!
• Mission 33 – May 18, 2024 – Westchester County Airport (HPN)
• Mission 34 – October 19, 2024 – New York Stewart International Airport (SWF)

When will I know if I have been accepted onto the next Honor Flight?

Generally, initial confirmations go out 3 months prior to the next flight.

I am a Korean War Veteran. Can I go on an Honor Flight?

YES! We are currently taking WWII, post-WWII, Korean War and post-Korean War veterans on our flights. Please note that our WWII Veterans do take priority, though. We keep all Korean War veterans’ applications on file, and selections for the flights are made in the order in which the applications are received. Applications can be mailed to our PO Box or completed online.

Can my son, daughter, grandson, etc. come as a guardian?

Our TOP priority is the safety of our veterans! All guardians are required to attend an orientation session – family members, included. A family member, or a guardian who the veteran chooses, is given priority over a volunteer – as long as they meet all the required criteria.

I am a spouse of a vet. Can I go?

Respectfully, no. Spouses are not permitted to travel on an Honor Flight. If you would like to keep in contact during flight day, we recommend texting with the guardian that is traveling with your spouse (veteran). In addition, we will be on Facebook all day long with live video and photos.

How much does it cost and how much money do I need to bring?

The cost is FREE for the honored veterans. You do not need to bring any money, unless you intend to purchase souvenirs. Food and transportation in D.C. are provided as part of flight day.

How do you decide which veterans can go?

Veterans are generally selected and flown on a “first-come, first-served basis.” Within the applicants, top priority is currently given to WWII veterans and veterans with terminal illnesses.

How can I make a donation to Hudson Valley Honor Flight?

Hudson Valley Honor Flight is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Donations should be made payable to Hudson Valley Honor Flight or HVHF and mailed to: P.O. Box 375, Walden, NY 12586. Donations can also be made online via Paypal at www.hvhonorflight.com/donate.

How are you funded?

Our funding comes primarily from individuals and local businesses and corporations who recognize the great accomplishments, service and sacrifices of our veterans and want them to see their memorials. ShopRite is our primary corporate sponsor. We would not be able to honor our veterans without their great generosity. If you would like to make a donation, please visit our donations page for some suggested options.

What if the veteran is on oxygen or needs a wheelchair?

WHEELCHAIRS – About 80% of our veterans need wheelchairs at some point during Flight Day. Our deluxe motor coaches are ordered with this in mind. Our coaches are equipped with wheelchair lifts. If there is a possibility that a veteran may need a wheelchair during one of our trips, we ask that the veteran bring their own or contact us and we will make arrangements to have one available.

OXYGEN – If a veteran requires oxygen, HVHF makes accommodations to ensure that they can still take part on our flight to Washington. Please contact us at 845-391-0076 and we will put you in touch with our medical coordinator.

Are terminally ill WWII veterans given special priority?

YES! Such veterans go to the top of the list for the next Hudson Valley Honor Flight departing for Washington D.C. Generally, there are two flights each Spring and Fall. Apply here »

What is the cost to be a guardian on a flight?

The cost to participate as a guardian is $500. Checks can be made payable to HVHF (Hudson Valley Honor Flight) and mailed to the address in the footer. Due to the high volume of guardian applications, there is a waiting list for guardians who are not specifically requested by veterans. Checks will not be cashed without consent until the guardian’s application has been accepted.
